3 different takes on classical (click on photo for the links)

Arvo Pärt (1935 - ) - Mystical Minimalism

If you're going to download anything I've put up, make it this one.
Part is easily my favourite composer, a man obsessed with angels, icons and the Russian Orthodox Church who creates contemporary minimalist classical pieces with floating simple melodies that are reminiscent of holy music.
Plus the rhythmic complexity of a piece like Benjamin Brittten shows why he was so influential on later period minimalist like Steve Reich.

Hans Otte (1926 -2007) - Experimental Classical

I don't know a lot about Otte, but this solo piano cycle, Das Buch der Klänge« (The Book of Sounds, 1979-82) is a beautiful collection that brings to mind great composers like Satie and Debussy.
But the way notes and harmonics slow push and meld into one another, and the prominence of silence speaks of John Cage, Terry Riley, Morton Feldman.
A great album to put on while you're mind may be elsewhere, and let the touches of melodies float around.

Hauschka (Volker Bertelmann) - Classical House
Bertelmann is a young german known more for his prepared piano and chamber pieces (a style made most well known by Cage and La Monte Young, read here if you want to know more), but here with guys from Mum and Calexico, he gives us his take on House music.
I've only just started listening to it, and while there's moments of too much preciousness and tweeness, it's also absolutely great at times.
As a reviewer said elsewhere it's not house music, but it's not not house music either.
You can also watch him prepare his piano in these amazing series of videos at NPR.org

Can i get an amen?

Last night at the Palais.....

Mavis Staples playing with the most incredible three piece, swamp rock, proper Muscle Shoals style soul backing group
[Rick Holmstrom ripped on guitar, Jeff Turmes on bass and the incredible Stephen Hodges of Tom Waits/David Lynch/T-Bone fame on drums].
This version of 'The Weight' sums it up...

and

Blind Boys with...a man who I've always wanted to hear live....Aaron Neville, i aint ever heard a sweeter voice....

He destroyed this version of People Get Ready

No-one's won boys...

Nick Craft, Sydney muso, member of Zillions and Sidewinder, popped up with this one.

In The Hole

Tiger & Woods.
Two german dudes who've been putting together some absolute bangers the past coupla years, and quite a lote of edits too. Got them off, yet again, Andee's show.
This track's off one of their EPs- Caddy Shag. Their other ones, Hole in One, and Out of Bounds, contain must-boogie tracks. Such winning gags names all round. Can't stop playing them. They're dropping an album next month too.

Uh oh

Had this hook stuck in my head on and off for over a year now. Finally figured out the track.
such a catchy beat. I prefer the original sans Busta & Fabolous, but the clip contains a young Bodie circa '03.

On the Laidback tip....

Cool indeed

Following suit from Jules - listening to Andee Frost's show last night from the clink, I heard this banger. It demands a good sound system, my headphones are still hurting.

Click the video for a bio of the song. Love the clip.

ACID

Got my acid house on listening to Andee Frost's show last night- mid set. Tripping balls to this would be ideal, with smoke machines and lasers surrounding. A hospital bed'll have to do for now.

Found this Tyree track on this comp 'Soul Jazz Records Presents: ACID can you jack?'. Sweet vocals. Deep and dirty stuff. Have tried looking for a torrent of it but so far no luck. Maybe Boss can have a dig? It's got all the notables of the genre- Virgo Four, Phuture, Marshall Jefferson, Lil Louis, Larry Heard etc...

Benson, three ways

Last year, my friend Adrian and I messed around with this song a bit:

The original is killer. Benson is a corny motherfucker but I love the guy.

Anyway, pretty heavily inspired by Hudson Mohawke, we chopped that shit up, and came up with this:

Benson Wip by molokaicops

(If you're wondering where we got our name from, check this out. Incredible shit.)

I also found a couple of nice loops in there and got deep with the filters. I think I was listening to 'Can't Kick This Feeling' a lot at the time..

Much more than they can see by oscaro

To the "Boys who like to dance without girls"

From what I understand this is a remix by O.A.U! of Goma de Mascar's self titled song. The footage is also remixed, with some of it from their first performance on a Spanish musical TV show from 1979.

The original is worth watching as well, the video makes the song.

The fist pumping is mad gags.

A lighter shade of smooth

I only just heard this the other day, but it's killer. Sounds like a Diplomats mixtape beat

I've liked this beat since Selekt juggled it on one his mixtapes. Killer.

Classic. Fagan's salty as all hell. His girlfriend's got a male friend. He's not into it.
Weird video.

Highly sweated private press from two brothers. Sealed stock was found, now copies are hovering around $100. Amazing track.

Social Lubricant

Two songs to warm your loins

Smooth as jam from 84 by late era kool and the gang producer Eumir Deodato (amazing name) in collaboration with kleeer. It would be amazing to catch her eye across the dancefloor to this song... 'seeerious!'

"It's a lazy afternoon, just the kind of a day made for loving you..." Say no more. For getting down with your lady on a day like today.

Purty as all hell!

I can't seem to stop listening to this mix. Although I'm not going through any heart break I can just about shed some tears over the songs, particularly Darondo's Didn't I - super pretty soulful tunes. Credit to the Beat Electric blog.

good daggy australian music

after the saints in the 80s there seems to be a natural urge to get deeper on the daggy australian front. it don't get much daggier and cooler than this little number. awesome clip too.

It's yet to be verified, but i think the small guy playing sax, i mean the guy playing the small sax, may in fact be the father of one of the esteemed contributors to this blog.

Haile Selassie Karate

Never been a huge Pharoahe Monch fan, but this track of his new album is dope.

Beat and hook are big with a 'dilla feel, over which Monch always sounds best.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY OSCAR!!!

This mix moves through some pretty Oscar'ish terrain.
Really dig the Crazy P track at 22min, and then straight in to Ronnie Dyson... ohhyeahhh

Happy birthday O!

"Here is the mix from one of the Belgrades most porolific dj's and promoters Slobodan Brkic aka Dj brka, who shaked many dance floors from Nu York to Belgrade, and have been responsible for rising belgrades disco scene from ashes to top favoured music genre amongst the belgrade clubbers this days... enjoy"

Slobodan AKA DJ Brka - This is My Modern Mix by demorgan

David Foster Wallace

On a bit of a different tip today - but I know there's enough DFW love floating around to justify a quick departure.

With the release of The Pale King, there's been a bit of interesting DFW reading going around.

In the New Yorker recently, Backbone is an excerpt from the above new book.

And here, is a really wonderful article by Maria Bustillos about reading what is left of DFW's papers and self-help books.

Finally, for a bit of poignant musical accompaniment, grab this for the approaching winter months. Completely DFW-unreleated, Nils Frahm is a young Berlin composer (in the vein of Peter Broderick and Max Richter) whose Wintermusik is achingly beautiful. Well worth a listen

New Ghost

It's not that new, came out December last year, new for me. I like the Woman of the Ghetto sample.

Undecided on the album, no Supreme Clientele (of which there is a Part II coming out, good to see him following the trend...), worth a listen though. The first and last tracks are where it's at.

A John Morales Mix

John Morales was one of the pioneering mixers of the disco and early 80s eras, along with dudes like Tom Moulton, Francois K, Walter Gibbons and Larry Levan.

He mixed a bunch of the underground classics, including 'Barely Breaking Even' by the Universal Robot Band (Leroy Burgess and Co.), one of my all-time favourites.

The record label BBE (yep, named after the above song) has put out a couple of compilations of unreleased mixes by John Morales. The first one was a killer, and the second volume has just been released. There are a bunch of great tracks on it, including an extended remix of 'Young Hearts Run Free' (I'm looking at you, Blake). Well worth a listen. Check out John's website hurrrrr.

Also worth noting, he has put up a bunch of free acetate mixes if you look hard enough. Quality is average and some of them are a bit wacky, but well worth a listen. The extended mix of Lady Bug in particular is great.

Here's a promo remix that Morales put up in tribute to the late great Loletta:

3 Chairs

I've gotten pretty heavily into Moody and Theo over the last year thanks to Josh & Tig. A few tracks I kept coming across were labelled Three Charis, but sounded very familiar. It wasn't long ago that I discovered that this was a collaboration between Moodyman, Theo Parrish and Rick Wilhite, with some additions along the way. Dammmnnnnn...

In 2009 they put out an album called Spectrum, it seems to be a 'best of', all the bangers, click the pic for it.

Also, I came across these mixes recorded from a radio set. Got me through work the other day, it's about 4 hours worth in total, the mixing varies a lot but there are plenty of good tunes. Perfect for getting deep...

Recloose - Resident Advisor mix

I've been banging this mix out a bit on my daily constitution.

Its really great big room house if you're into that kind of thing and includes this absolute huge Subliminal esque track from a Melbourne guy called The Tortoise

Been really enjoying this Epic record by Sharon Van Etten, a Brooklyn native who writes some 'blow me away apt' heart break songs.

COS/MES - Naruto

http://soundcloud.com/kingkungfoo/cos-mes-naruto

I'm really digging this Japanese art/skate (doesn't get much better ;-) collective COS/MES.
If you like this you can get more of their output here,

or their percussion lab mix which is one of my favourite things from last year.

MOVE D - Animals Dancing April 15th

Here's a link to and excellent and super deep Move D mix - he's playing at Mercat in a few weeks...

Might need a second addition of boys who like to dance without girls for this one.

Move D (Runnin Back) - Après - 8th November by future classic

By the Boss

Thought i'd sneak this one in, in defence of the Boss.

Written by Springsteen for Elvis, this one's killa.

Lot of people prefer the woeful Pointer sisters version, which climbed the charts, but what do they know.

The Boss, sexy and slow...

http://www.popstarsplus.com/images/BruceSpringsteenPicture.jpg

Hey musical friends,

here's a couple I've been enjoying of late, Springsteen done right, and Roy Ayers Herbert style...wrong in the best possible way.

Peak Twins- I'm Out

Adelaide seems to be a breeding ground for great deadshit pop at the moment.
I think one of the Bitch Prefect (who's 7" is fucking brilliant) guys is in this band.

Download their EP here

Meet Me in Salt Lake City

Been loving this too. He's a Melbourne dude I think.

PB Wolf Valentines Day Mix 2007

This mix was a really big thing for me a few years back. Great track selection, some really good juggling in the first few tracks, and also the mixing is not only good as far as tempos are concerned (tough with soul music recorded before the time of click tracks), but also spot-on with keys/pitch.

Short and sweet. Check the last track in particular. Beautiful.

SHED MNML SSGS MIX

Hi Guys,

Not sure if you've already heard this but is one of my favourite house mixes, great 90s vibes, and 90s mixing style, but mostly great traxx.

Care of Mnml Ssgs
